Guest Speaker 1/20/17

A special "thank you" goes out to Cheryl Ogden for visiting the entire First Grade at Fred C Underhill School. We learned what it is like to be a dentist in 2017. We especially liked examining all the false teeth! Thank You again Cheryl!!!

Happy New Year!

READING
Happy New Year and best wishes for a wonderful 2017.  Now that we are back to school after a long break, it's time to get down to SERIOUS business.  These next few months are the key to a successful year.  We have relatively few breaks until Winter Break, so we can get a lot of work done.  We will be working hard on Reading skills to help the children become better independent readers.  Comprehension skills will be especially important.  These are skills such as looking for the main idea and details of the story.  Also, we will do a lot of predicting, comparing, contrasting, and drawing conclusions.  I tell the students that they are "reading detectives".  They need to use all the clues in a story to figure out what the author is telling them.  These clues include the pictures and the words.  Sometimes the author doesn't tell them everything and they need to infer some information.  We will practice that skill as well.  Please keep reading at home daily.

Our Imagine It! Unit 4 theme is "Our Neigborhood at Work." Over the next three weeks, students will investigate the meaning of the word work by asking questions and collecting information about a specific type of work. Each week students will gain a better understanding of jobs as they progress through the unit. The culmination of the unit will be a Research Project that each child will complete and present on "Career Day." Look for details about this project coming home soon!

MATH
In Unit 7 and Unit 8 we will be working on the students' proficiency with addition and subtraction.  They will make up and solve number stories, work on their addition facts (+0, +1, doubles, and sums of 10), explore place value with base-10 blocks, and practice number patterns.  We will discuss number relationships: more than, less than, and equal. We will be making patterns and ordering numbers. We will also be discussing place value.
