The Brain Show - June 13, 2017

The Brain Showsm is the perfect vehicle to celebrate education and to communicate to children that learning can be cool and fun. TheBrain Showsm makes for an engaging school assembly show because it presents an entertaining, yet educational platform to involve the students, as well as their teachers.
The Brain Showsm has the authentic look and feel of a real live TV game show complete with colorful podiums that feature computerized lights and sounds. The show can be adapted to meet the curriculum needs of your school. Educational questions, submitted by your teachers, can be incorporated into the game show to test your students on topics they have recently covered.

Mrs. Salcito's Fabulous First Graders thoroughly enjoyed this assembly! Many of us got called out of the audience to participate! It was a fun experience!

Unit 8 Away We Grow(Highlights)

Artist in Residence Experience

Theo  Martey and the Akwaaba Ensemble visited Underhill for a week long Artist in Residence experience. The residency began with a whole school performance by Theo and the Akwaaba Ensemble. Over the course of the week, each class worked with Theo to learn more about West African drumming and dance. The students were engaged in learning about the different types of drums, the songs, the dances, and the culture. We ended the residency with a grand performance by our second grade students who were led by Theo. They did an amazing job with their songs and dance in front of the rest of the school and parents. Thanks to Mrs. Landsman, Library Media Specialist, who secured the grant money to bring Theo to the school. Also, thanks to the staff for their flexibility with schedules. Most importantly, thank you to Theo for sharing his art form and culture with us.

DIY Planetarium

We have been learning about stars and constellations. The culmination of our learning included making a DIY Planetarium. The students had to design a constellation and write a story about it. They also were charged with the task of going into the DIY Planetarium and carefully poking holes in the roof so that the constellation they designed could easily be enjoyed by all. This was an amazing experience overall! Please make sure to ask your children to look at the stars with you. They should be able to tell you the story of many constellations (i.e. Leo, Cassiopeia, Big Dipper, Little Dipper, Scorpius, Gemini, and Orion).
